Lifestyle

I wanted the 12 weeks to be over....to only find out that I want the accountability back. After a few weeks off from journaling, exercising and trying to eat six meals a day, I found myself feeling slow.

The only thing I knew that would work for me is to do this all over again....and never stop. A decision had to me made. Live life like I was, with no thought to the importance of being physically fit to serve God, or be willing to sacrafice.

Sacrafice: Time....making appointments to work out. I've discovered I can do be at the gym around 5:30AM.....I will do this and love it.

Eating: Six mini meals a day to increase my metabolism. Sounds great, but difficult to do. Making a life long commitment to plan and prepare family meals the night before.

Obstacles: Sleeping in, kids off to school, Matty's schedule, work, events, and of course having fun.. I must continue to understand that my body is not my own. My faith has everything to do with how I live, and I must live how I love.

Overcoming: Being in a room full of physically fit, healthy, beautiful people can be intimidating or inspiring. I choose to be inspired of the hard work and dedication it takes to be healthy.

Join me in this year long event to becoming physically fit.

10 Things That I Learned

After starting the Commit 2 B Fit with a little trepidation - I soon found my groove. I was able to post a 15 pound loss during the 12 week period and I already feel much better. However, I also found the experience to be an opportunity for learning - not just a weight loss endeavor.

Here are 10 things that I learned during the Commit 2 B Fit:

1. It is much easier to listen to John Mayer sing "Gravity", than to actually show up to Rachel's gravity class.

2. Even weight training can be a spiritual experience. Several times I saw a bright white light right before I passed out.

3. Even men retain a lot of water. The first 5 lbs of water weight was easy. After that it was torture.

4. Don't let the word "quick" when it comes in front of "spin" fool you. The spin was not nearly "quick" enough for me.

5. I can leg press more than John Bray.

6. Whoever decided that the gym should be located just across the street from the emergency room made a really good decision.

7. Some things, like getting started on an exercise program, are hard to do alone. It is best done with a caring group.

8. Accountability is both good and bad. It forced me to make good eating decisions most of the time. But other times it made me eat the buffet only when I was out of town when no one could see me - like while making hospital visits in Iowa City. Not that I remember a specific incident or anything.

9. Exercise is easier to do when you are in better shape. Go figure.

10. The on-line heart risk profiles that we were asked to do were really helpful. Mine came back not only with a cardiac risk score, but also with driving directions to the nearest hospital that does open heart surgery.

RED TEAM RULES

Once agian, the RED Team takes on challenge after challenge....

LEAN GREEN

With Bob's first week full-time on site...we had to celebrate! Although he did not receive his green team shirt yet, he was willing to wear a fuzzy green scarf to cheer on the team.

Lunch with Nate

PIZZA with NATE? Hmm.....and I was doing so well! Some of us fell into the temptations of eating things we shouldn't. But once Nate suggested a race to see who could eat a slice of pizza first! GAME ON! I lost....Nate won. But, for whatever reason, God has certainly blessed him with energy and creative ways to increase a heart rate WITHOUT DOING CARDIO... here, Nate is ready to strike from under the drinking fountain..and he did. The kids' screamed and ran away laughing. Boy, he's good. I'm certain he lost the fat and claories from the pizza as soon as he began to play.

The Weigh In Process

The weigh in process....you get to keep your clothes on! Each week the staff had specific times on Tuesday Mornings with Cathy. We would report on our journal, turn in our points awarded for the week, step on a scale and monitor our fat loss. Cathy would give us a new challenge for the week and hold us accountable for how we were doing. The entire process only took about 5 minutes per participant. The next in line would eagerly await their turn while in the hallway. This process became a very rewarding time for the staff. We were their to celebrate each others loss, or gain. Keep up to date on what we were doing or where we were struggling.

Pretty in Pink starring John Bray

On a cold winters day Mark Schmerse was dreaming about the staff loosing 200lbs in one week. How amazing that would be. What a challenge for all of us to stay focused, come together and do that as a team. the Rewards would be plenty, especially that of seeing John Bray in a lovely skirt. I think so!

Team I know we are doing great! Let's kick it into high gear so we meet that goal!

Hey We are seeing a lot of baggy pants around here!

Date night has now become "let's go to the gym!" This new way of life is rewarding! It has given us energy beyond what I understood it to be for several years. My clothes are a bit looser. My skin seems more clear. My relationships at church....I love getting to know you! The staff at Gold's Gym is always supportive and encouraging. But the best experience thus far is the relationship with my family. My support group. My daughters telling me "I'm so proud of you mom" and my husband making sure I make time to take care of myself. They too, are finding how great they feel. My husband is becoming a gym rat! My daughters finding ways to improve on the quality and quanity of each workout. And to this we give THANKS. We are looking at John 3:16... most of us would consider this a simple verse. Not often studied because we get it! But as we commit ourselves to be fit for Him...this verse reminds us of how much he loves us. I feel that God is proud of all of us right now. And with His words he places on the tounges of my family and friends just to say...."I'm Proud of You." How awesome it is to live for Him.

Double Dog Dare

Okay, here's the deal. I know several of you are making challenges with each other. We love that, but let us in!
We want to encourage and have fun with you as well.

Did you know that JOHN BRAY has been challenged?

From what I understand from the Gold's staff is they believe we could possibly loose 200 lbs in one week! Seriously!

The challenge on the table....if the staff at HWC looses 200 lbs. in one week John Bray said he would wear a skirt to the office!

Personally, I can't wait to see this and I am sure you can't either. So let's get it done! Hey John, I understand that Nate has a closet full, perhaps you can just borrow one of his. (smile)

Let us know if you have a challenge with someone.....or a double dog dare! And remember COMMIT 2B FIT

Top 10 Things I Learned From Commit 2 B Fit

10. Cathy’s spinning class is not as easy as it looks.

9. Going through Wendy’s drive-thru after an hour-long work out is an
exercise…an exercise in futility.

8. I never realized how often, in times of stress, I turn to food instead of turning to God.

7. An hour on an exercise bike will give a person empathy for hemorrhoid sufferers.

6. Asking your personal trainer how long you have to work out in order to eat a can of Pringles will earn you extra reps.

5. I really do feel better about me and life in general when I take care of myself.

4. Trying to copy the guy doing pull-ups with a 90 lb. weight chained around is waist is really not a wise move.

3. My kids think their being punished when they see that the cookies have been replaced with raw carrots and broccoli.

2. Spandex bicycle shorts are not my friend.

1. I can better serve God when I take care of the body and life He’s given me.

Serving Him by serving them,
Vikki Huisman

The Little Black Book

Instead of watching the Today Show or Sponge Bob Square Pants on his day off, Matt is studying and developing a family game plan and menu for the week while making sure his intake is on target.

The Little Black Book certainly has become an important part of our daily lives. Journal entries for food and exercise has, at times, seemed consuming. Figuring out serving size, calories, carbs, protein and fat! Wow. But during this time don't feel discouraged. Remember what Rachel Zim Zim said in Tuesday's meeting...."this is a very important part of our life change. Keep at it...soon, it will be a normal part of your life. The rewards are great."

Healthy lifestyles, healthy hearts, focused minds. God is preparing us for His will in our lives and food and nutrition will never have to be an obstacle again.

JUST DO IT
DO IT RIGHT
DO IT RIGHT NOW

WE LOVE YOU CATHY! Keep up the great work.

A TIME TO HEAL....

Funeral arrangements have been made for our dearly departed staff person, Les S More, as all 144 lbs of him were put to rest this week, never to return! Although Les has been a dear friend to us all, his annoying habits of always hanging around and nagging us will not be missed. Although he was often a comfort to us, we realize that we truly can live without him!

Please take a moment to remember Les in silence, and then celebrate and rejoice because he has certainly gone to a better place, and we believe he would have wanted us to remember him that way…

CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE FOR COMMITTING 2B FIT!!!

Tim Howard was our “biggest loser” this week, taking off 9lbs!! Also, several ladies took off 7 lbs!! Way to go, everybody. Keep up the great work, and we’ll see you at the gym!
